How to move on.

There is frequently a desire or even need to feel that each session with a therapist will offer some relief, that the pace towards a solution will be fast and steady, and perhaps most of all, that after everything is said and done, everyone can move on with their lives as before.

It is important to keep in mind that therapy is a process, not an event. The difficulties that we face in life, the reasons we end up at the therapist's office in the first place, are multifaceted and complex. Rarely is what is first thought of as a 'problem' really THE 'problem'. Furthermore, rarely are the participants able to visualize a future where the problem is a thing of the past. Instead, most people in the beginning of therapy visualize a future identical to the days before the 'problem' appeared.

For all intents and purposes, the past is a thing of the past, now done and gone and just a figment of our imagination at this point. The goal of therapy is to create a future with new parameters, new rules, a new way of life where the problem has become a part of the solution.

Recognize that the problem can be a tool and not an obstacle, and the solution will begin to reveal itself.
